Are immigrants protected by the EEOC?

Whether you are considering moving to the United States on a work visa or are already employed in the country, it is very important for you to understand your rights in the workplace as an immigrant. In Miami-Dade, and across the rest of Florida, some immigrants have been subjected to on-the-job discrimination and other employee rights violations. When employers violate the law, they should not be allowed to get away with their actions.

According to the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, employment discrimination targeting immigrants is against the law. For example, your employer cannot treat you in a different manner because of your accent, even though it does not affect your ability to perform your job responsibilities. Moreover, you cannot be discriminated against because of the place you were born or because of your ethnic appearance.

For many immigrants, there are a number of hurdles that must be overcome in order to start working in the U.S. For example, some struggle with paperwork and understanding various requirements related to immigration, while others may have a great deal of emotional pain because they are no longer able to spend time with their family members. Unfortunately, jobsite discrimination can make life even more challenging for people who are in this position. If you believe that you have dealt with these types of violations, you should not hesitate to have those responsible for unlawful discrimination held accountable.

Please remember that this post was compiled to shed light on workplace discrimination against immigrants and is not legal advice.
