How should I handle domestic violence as an immigrant?

From paperwork to immigration-related concerns, those who immigrate to the U.S. may have a number of challenges. Unfortunately, some have additional difficulties, such as being subjected to domestic violence. In Miami, it is important for those who are currently living in the U.S. as an immigrant to recognize their rights and take action if they are being abused.

According to the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, immigrants who are domestic violence victims have a number of rights in the country. For example, they are allowed to pursue the custody of children and child support. Moreover, they are eligible to receive any marital property they are entitled to, pursue a protection order for themselves as well as their kids and file for divorce without their spouse’s consent.

For immigrants, divorce can be especially tough for a number of reasons. Sometimes, people may not be aware of the protections that are offered in the U.S., since the laws in their country of origin may be different. Or, people may be worried that standing up for their rights could result in them being deported or unable to obtain citizenship.

When domestic violence is present, victims should take steps to protect themselves and provide a healthy environment for their kids as soon as possible. Whether someone is an immigrant or was born in the U.S., domestic violence is unacceptable.
