Child support matters and immigration

For those who move to the U.S., or are hoping to become citizens, there are a wide variety of topics that can create uncertainty. In Miami, and in cities around other parts of Florida, some immigrants are unsure of which steps should be taken with regard to child support issues. At Cuevas, Garcia & Torres, our law firm knows the different ways in which child support matters can interfere with immigration.

On the one hand, you may be a parent who wishes to have your child’s non-custodial parent held responsible for the child support they owe. In fact, child support payments can be especially important for some of those who have immigrated to the U.S. On the other hand, you may owe child support and be unsure of how child support issues could affect your immigration status.

If you apply for a green card or U.S. citizenship, delinquent child support payments could be problematic. During the application process, you will need to show that you have good moral character. Unfortunately, if you owe back child support, this could result in your application being turned down. As a result, you should try to fulfill your child support obligations prior to submitting an application for a green card or citizenship.

Aside from child support and other family law topics, immigrants may have to work through diverse challenges before they move to the U.S. and after they have relocated. If you go take a look at our page devoted to immigrant visas, you can go over even more legal issues on immigration.
