What mistakes are common in an adjustment of status interview?

If you arrived in the country on a temporary status, such as with a temporary work visa or vacation permit, you may have decided to apply for an adjustment of status to seek permanent residency. Many temporary residents in Florida petition to change to permanent status for a variety of reasons. According to U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, after submitting your application for an adjustment of status, you should have an interview with a USCIS official to determine your eligibility.

This may be a stressful time for you, whether or not you initially feel nervous. It is not uncommon to make a few minor errors during an important interview, and USCIS officers understand this. However, there are some mistakes that may delay the approval of your application or, in some cases, cause it to be rejected. The following points illustrate a few of these:

  • Forgetting to bring important original documents, such as birth certificates and passports
  • Not bringing documents that prove a life change, such as a marriage or divorce certificate, birth certificates of minor children born in the country or proof of employment
  • Concealing important information like an arrest or criminal conviction
  • Failing to bring an interpreter if needed
  • Arguing with the USCIS officer over any matter, rather than handling a disagreement respectfully

It may be extremely inconvenient if your adjustment of status interview is delayed because you were not properly prepared for the event, or if you were dishonest or disrespectful. Therefore, it is important to understand what is expected of you before you appear for the meeting.
