Becoming a U.S. citizen is the ultimate goal of many people who immigrate to Florida. It is not a goal that can be accomplished overnight. In fact, there are many legal issues that must be resolved and an application process that must be fulfilled, including taking a naturalization test.

One test, several components

A person who wishes to become a naturalized U.S. citizen must show proficiency in various areas. A naturalization test is comprised of several sections, each one pertaining to a topic or issue that the applicant must be able to prove that he or she understands and can show acquired, adequate skills of mastery. The following list outlines the basic categories and topics included in a naturalization test:

  • Civics
  • Language
  • Speaking, reading and writing English
  • S. history
  • American government

Various portions of the naturalization test are designed to show that the person taking the test is able to read and understand English and can also write and speak the language. To demonstrate verbal usage of the language, an immigration official will ask the test taker questions during the exam that he or she must answer aloud.

It is also necessary for a person seeking citizenship to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the basics of American government, including naming the three main branches of government and knowing how each branch functions. An applicant for citizenship must also be able to correctly answer basic questions regarding U.S. history. It is a good idea for anyone in Florida who is planning to seek citizenship to discuss his or her plans with someone well-versed in immigration and naturalization laws ahead of time in order to learn what will be expected and how to navigate the system.
