Many immigrants with work visas or green cards dream of becoming citizens. Citizenship for those born abroad requires naturalization. The naturalization process is somewhat complex.
It involves an application followed by a thorough background check and then an interview. At that interview, the immigrant hoping to become a United States citizen has to pass two tests. Many immigrants let the testing requirements intimidate them out of pursuing citizenship. Thankfully, immigrants who know the three facts about naturalization testing listed below may feel more confident about their pursuit of citizenship.
There are study resources available
The interviewer from the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) administers two tests during the naturalization interview. There is an English language test. That test involves reading and writing in English. The immigrant also has to communicate in verbal English and demonstrate their ability to understand spoken English.
They must also pass a verbal test about civics. The Civics test involves questions about the history and government of the United States. People have to answer 10 questions drawn from a list of 100. They need to get at least six questions right to pass. Immigrants can use vocabulary study guides and the full list of Civics questions to help prepare for the tests.
There are exemptions available
Some immigrants qualify for exemptions for the English language test. English can be particularly difficult to learn later in life. Immigrants who are at least 50 years old and who have been in the country for many years may qualify for an exemption for the English language test. They may be able to take the Civics test in the language they speak proficiently. Applicants with certain special needs may qualify for testing accommodations that make it easier for them to pass.
Immigrants who fail can retake the test
Even those who prepare fastidiously can fail a test. Illness or anxiety can affect test performance. The good news is that immigrants who fail naturalization testing have the option of retaking the test one time. If they fail again, then they may have to reapply for naturalization. If they pass the second time, they can move forward with the naturalization process.
Becoming a United States citizen requires preparation and dedication. Many immigrants can pass the naturalization tests when they know what to expect.
